Grants
It may be that the work you most want to do right now is not of the sort for which most companies would be willing to pay you. Perhaps you are a writer, researching a book; or an artist, sculptor, or musician. Maybe you want to run a social program for the homeless, or engage in similar selfless endeavors. For those of you who are drawn to pursuits for which our society does not generally pay well, if at all, I present a list of sites where you can investigate the possibility of a grant.

Now, don't think for a moment that this is easy, or the way to get through life without working, or any kind of substitute for a "real job". The chances of ever getting a grant are astronomically small, and it is an area where those who know the most about how to get a grant, will generally come before those who are more worthy, but ignorant of the process. And, even if you do get the grant you are seeking, you must manage the project being funded well, account for all money to the penny, and make sure you avoid even the appearance of impropriety. A job is way easier.

But people who are drawn to these sorts of things are usually not the types who let little things like extreme difficulty deter them, so here goes:

Grants.Net - An Electronic Roadmap for Grants
The Federal government gives away millions of dollars every year. Unless your uncle is a U.S. Senator, your only way of getting some of this money is through the competitive grant process. That is, you write and submit a proposal, as do many, many, other people, and if your proposal is judged to be one of the more worthy, you receive the money necessary to fund it. Or, more likely, nowhere near enough money to fund it; at least not from a single source. This is arguably the best site for accessing the widest variety of government grants. The road to a government grant is often a long and difficult route; they have chosen a good metaphor for the site. But there is a lot of information here, and it would be the first place I would go to start the process.

Grants & Funding Information Service
This site, and the other sites and databases it points towards, is more academically oriented than others. There is lots of grant information, and links to searchable databases of funding sources.

Database of Arts Resources
If you are an artist looking for funding, this is probably the first Internet resource you should turn to. Includes an excellent searchable database of funding sources.
