General Research
Sometimes, you need to do some basic research for your job-hunt - that is, you need to find data that does not specifically relate to the next company you are going to approach, or the like. In such a case, you will need to turn towards the general research tools on the Net:
RefDesk
This is what you'd call a "meta-research" page; it seems like every possible Web resource is here. On their home page, without scrolling (what I call "above the fold"), you can do searches through Google, MSN, their own database, or do lookups in Mirriam-Webster's dictionary and thesaurus. You can catch up on the latest news, see stock quotes, see the official time in the United States, from one of the government's atomic clocks, accurate to 2/10 of a second. As you scroll, you gain access to People Search (directory lookups), current news, both national and local (type in your zip code), reference sites, quick looks at lists such as government 800 numbers, phone numbers of your local officials, and on and on. This almost wasn't a Parachute Pick, because I hate, detest, abhor (hold on, let me look in the thesaurus) loathe, despise, and execrate pop-up ads. But if you have a pop-up blocker, or if you feel love, affection, devotion, fondness, yearning, or ardor for pop-ads, then by all means, go for it.

About.com
About.com is different than most of your research resources on the Net, in that every entry was compiled and written by actual people, specifically for this site. In fact, almost 500 people, writing on thousands of subjects. Excellent and authoritative. The URL I have given you is for the page from their browser; here you can start looking through their list of topics alphabetically. At the bottom of the page are the links to the rest of the alphabet.
