Meta-Search Tools
A meta-search engine is one where your query is submitted to a number of search engines; then a few of the returns from each are combined into a list of results. In practical terms, they are tools that cut broadly but not deeply. If you want to get a quick overview of what's available for a certain search query, then a meta-search engine may be okay. Because of their lack of depth, I personally believe that meta-searchers are of limited use "kind of between a directory and a normal search engine” but there are times when they can be useful.
Dogpile
Among the search engines that Dogpile uses are Google, Teoma, Yahoo!, and Ask, as well as directories such as Looksmart and the Open Directory. There are other engines and databases it uses to return a certain amount of commercial results. Dogpile is one of the ethical sites where sponsored results are clearly marked as such. The site has some nice features; it remembers your last few searches; it suggests ways to refine your search; you can choose where to focus your search; for example, Web pages, multimedia, news, images, etc.

Beaucoup
A little different than your basic meta-search engine, Beaucoup queries, and returns results from, Google, Yahoo!, Alta Vista, Fast, Ask Jeeves, Lycos, MSN, Wisenut, Hotbot, and AOL Search, and tells you from which one each of its results came. You can also tell it to search only one of the engines at a time (though this is somewhat self-defeating - why use a meta-search engine at all?) "Sponsored results" are clearly marked in a separate list from relevant results. In addition to the search engines I listed, Beaucoup has other resources it can tap. There are some databases (UnderWeb stuff) that you can direct the Beaucoup search engine towards.
