Volunteering
There are a number of reasons to volunteer.
  • It can be a route towards a paid position at an organization, where you can demonstrate your skills and value to the organization without straining their limited payroll resources.
  • It can be a good thing to do if you are currently unemployed, or waiting for a new job to start, and you have time on your hands that you don't need to spend job-hunting. Helping others is much better, karma-wise, than watching Jerry Springer.
  • Since networking is the quickest route to a new job, this is one more way to increase the number and range of people that you know, who may be able to help you find work.
If volunteering seems like something you would like to do, whatever your reasons, then here are some sites to try:
Volunteer Match
A good site for finding programs in your area. Mentoring, community projects, outreach to the elderly, local library book drives, neighborhood food banks… the list is endless. They even have a “Virtual Volunteer” section, where you can, for instance, donate your time to animal rights, conservation, and philanthropic organizations who need Web designers, grant writers, artists, etc. A very good site.

ServeNet
Another volunteer site, also with quite a few listings. This site is somewhat more polished than Volunteer Match; it has resources on the site, like tip sheets for volunteers, articles about volunteering, news clips, and the current temperature, which is always important to know whenever you get the urge to help somebody.

The site has a lot to recommend it, including sections on virtual volunteering, a listing of jobs for pay currently open at non-profits and social conscience organizations, newsletters you can sign up for… there’s quite a bit here.

Volunteer Canada
This is a government-funded Web site for volunteering in Canada. It’s more of a clearinghouse for information than an actual place to look for situations. To volunteer, you should link up with one of the 200 volunteer centers (well, okay, centres) across Canada at www.volunteer.ca/volcan/eng/content/vol-centres/locations.php?display=1,0,6

World Volunteer Web
This is the site created by the United Nations to serve as a center for information, organizations, and programs related to volunteering on a global basis. This site is best for getting a worldview of volunteering in general; if you are looking for hands-on situations, then the other sites listed here are more likely to be useful to you.
