Job Boards: Regionals
Regional Help Wanted
I would wager that you have never heard of Regional Help Wanted. But I’d bet you have heard of “Bay Area Help Wanted dot com”, or “Help Wanted Phoenix dot com”, or “Central Illinois Help Wanted dot com” and so on — currently 283 of them in the U.S and Canada. Using the standard fee-to-employer, free-to-job-hunter model, their innovative radio ad campaign has helped to establish them across the country in record time.

Job hunters can click on the map at the page listed above, or go to the alphabetical city listing at http://regionalhelpwanted.com/corporate/our_sites.cfm, and find the nearest one (the map will clearly indicate areas without a local board). Once there, you will find a better-than-average job board, with very complete job descriptions (there’s effectively no limit on the number of words employers can use to describe a job listing). The ratio of jobs available to jobseekers registered varies widely and wildly from one board to another in the system; you should check and see what’s available in your area.

Craigslist
Started in San Francisco, Craigslist has spread to over 50 cities around the U.S and the world. Though more of a community bulletin board than your typical job board, Craigslist is a site you ignore at your peril when job hunting. Why? Because there are tons of jobs here. As well as the typical range of jobs, there are others here that may interest you, particularly if you are looking for a job with a smaller business, if your work is more creative than most, or if you want to tap into areas of employment that might be somewhat out of the mainstream. Additionally, if you are starving and need some quick hourly or by-the-job work, their “gigs” section can be a life-saver — or an apartment-saver, or a car-payment maker.
craigslist is also excellent when you are relocating, because you can access the craigslist sites for so many cities around the country (and the world). It makes it easy to look for jobs, apartments, buy a car, etc., from a distance.

JobDig
This is the website of a popular (and free) job newspaper (which happens to be one of our sponsors). They publish weekly regional issues for cities in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and the Dakotas. Headquartered in Minneapolis, they are gradually moving into other markets. The website lists many jobs for the covered areas; you can search for a job by location, job type, or employer, and there is an extensive employer directory on the site. You can also view the various regional issues of the paper online, which contain helpful articles by well-known experts in the job-hunting field, as well as the published job listings and employer ads.
