Craigslist
Craigslist describes itself as an "online community"; it's a good description. Originally started in the San Francisco Bay Area, craigslist has quickly grown into a series of Web sites in 48 U.S. cities, as well as in cities in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, and Australia. The site is nothing special to look at, but the minimalist approach fits it well; it is about function and getting the job done. Style is not the point. Instead, come here to look for a job, sell your dishwasher or buy a car, find where to catch some live music this weekend, join in discussion groups on a variety of subjects, find an apartment or meet that special person, register to vote; it is an online reflection of the places where we live. A community. More particularly, and somewhat redundantly, there is the "community" section (the site, you'll notice, doesn't really believe in upper case letters), which is a series of running forums on different subjects. You can use this community section to hook up with people in the same line of work, start a job club, look for investors for your new business, and so on; almost anything goes. Another section allows you to post, and look for, "gigs", which are typically one-day (or less) jobs. If you are still job-hunting when the savings run out, and need to pick up some short-term work - as well as look for something more permanent and make connections with people that can help - then craigslist is the place to go.
