Mailing Lists
Mailing Lists are similar to Newsgroups, but are done through email, and don't always carry the varied threads that Usenet groups do. Mailing lists do exist on every subject possible; you subscribe to the lists you want to receive by sending an email; those lists are then sent to you periodically. If you want to stop subscribing, you send an unsubscribe message. (The subscription process is completely automated; I once had a heck of a time getting off some lists when the underlying software was incorrectly installed by the list manager, because there was no human to contact.) Like Usenet, Mailing Lists are another older Internet device. Many lists, at least the non-commercial ones, are disappearing. There are just plain better ways of communicating on the Net these days.

Compared to Message Boards and Usenet, mailing lists are a slow method of communicating, particularly for the job-hunter. Though at times useful for gathering information, they are just not as immediate in their nature as the other possibilities on the Net, and so I would not recommend them for direct communication with others.

Topica
On this Web site is a list of Mailing Lists, for oodles of subjects; lots of newsletters are mixed in here, too. Not all of them are going to be useful, of course, but with a little work, you will know which ones are going to bear fruit as you are looking for contacts.

Tile.Net
Not a fancy site by any means, but one of the most useful sites on the Internet. This is a list of mailing lists, organized by name, description, and domain; you will find "Description" most useful.

L-Soft
Access to over 72,000 mailing lists, searchable by keyword, country of origin, and so forth.
