How Chat Rooms Work
Here are some sites where you can find chat rooms.

Yahoo!Chat
Still the king of the chat room, Yahoo! has hosted chat groups for years, and thousands of people have used Yahoo! to increase the reach of their personal networks. Because it is so well known, it is one of the first places I would go for general chat subjects.

WetFeet
Wetfeet is one of the better job hunting sites, and they have a good selection of job-oriented chat rooms on the site.

AOL People Connection
This is the main page to jump into AOL's social networking areas, including the chat pages. Don't neglect the AIM (AOL Instant Messaging) directory, as so many people have this service.

MSN People & Chat
MSN stopped offering chat services after 10/18/2006, and they are encouraging people to use their Windows Live Messenger service at http://get.live.com/messenger/overview. But in truth, this is nowhere as good a resource as AIM and AOL's chat pages.

More On How Chat Rooms Work

Chat Rooms are places where you "meet with" other people, online, at the same time, and talk with each other using your keyboards. It's like watching the dialogue from a play script unfold line by line on your screen. Along with the sites listed, many job boards and job sites have chat rooms, though these are often more useful for venting your frustrations than finding people with the power to hire you.

Generally, chat sessions are between a number of people: most sites allow any number of people to "listen", but may have limits to the number of people who can get in at any moment to "talk". Some of these will be moderated, meaning that there is someone in charge, watching over the conversation, with the power to disconnect those who behave badly, but in fact these are rare, and most sites require self-policing. Many sites allow you to search through past conversations by keyword, so be careful what you say; it may be stored somewhere for a very, very long time. Some chat sites will allow you to leave the main thread, and "go off" to a private room for one-to-one conversations, but these are usually sites that lean towards personal relationships, rather than business ones. In fact, of all of the ways you can meet, and communicate with people, chat rooms are the least likely to be useful in your job hunt.
